The lokai Bracelet is all about finding your balance. lokai is like the Yin and Yang of life. Sometimes, we have our ups. Sometimes life can deal out some downs. Most days, however, are just ordinary days that we keep moving. The downs can feel as deep as the depths at the bottom of the dead see. Those highs can elevate your mood to the height of Mount Everest. Such is life’s delicate dance with balance.
The lokai Bracelet gets its name from the Hawaiian word Lokahi which means to unify opposite things or harmony. Lokahi means balance. The lokai bracelet has three different silicon beads in three different shades, each resplendent with an uplifting message.
The single black bead holds a bit of mud from the Dead Sea. The darkest hours in our lives cause our hearts to sink so deep we just want to give up. It’s these moments that we need to hold tight to hope. Has there been a time in your life when you didn’t think you could put one foot in front of the other? I have had many of those times in my life, but many of you actually shared one of the darkest points in my adult life. My ex-husband and I were experiencing significant marital distress. He was so hateful to my youngest son that my 13 year-old son became suicidal and I had to admit him to the hospital twice for attempted suicide or suicidal ideation. Since my then-husband was significantly disabled, I felt completely trapped in the relationship. I could not just leave him without making arrangements for his care. I sent my youngest son to live with my sister 8 hours away while I struggled with the planning our escape. I had no family in the area and felt completely alone. I began drinking heavily and felt like I was drowning in the darkest ocean. It was at those times that some of my wonderful readers like Paul G, Sandy E and several others were there with encouraging emails. My mom and sister shared words of wisdom in late night phone calls offering comfort. It was then that a friend threw me a lifeline and a safe place for me and my children. It was then that the only thing I had to hold were those words and a sliver of hope. The black silicon bead filled with mud from the Dead Sea reminds us to hold on to that hope. Sometimes, that may be all you’ve got, but life has balance and things will improve.
The single white bead holds a drop of water from Mount Everest and is significant for the wonderful heights we soar when we are on a mountaintop. I am living on my mountaintop now. I remarried a wonderful man who loves me and adopted my youngest son who was 16 at the time. My oldest son, now 22-years-old, has autism and David has taken him under his wing and accepts him as he is. We celebrated our 5th anniversary on July the 8th. He has two wonderful children of his own that accept me and my sons in their lives. David’s son and my son are the best of friends and called each other “brother” before David and I were even married. What a difference 5 years can make! It’s these days, when everything seems perfect that we need to stay grounded and remember to stay humble. Celebrating the exhilaration of happiness feels wonderful, but temper it with humility and remember life has balance.
Like the highs and lows of life, and the black and white in the color spectrum, these two beads exist on opposite sides of the bracelet. They are bound together by colorless beads that represent our daily life. These clear beads remind us that life isn’t about the highs or the lows, but the destination that got us there. Life is about the journey. Not every moment defines us.
You can’t actually see the mud and the water inside the beads. I am tempted to cut the beads open, however, I like the philosophy so much that I don’t want to destroy the bracelet to test the authenticity. I can enjoy the message without wanton destruction. Besides, someone else did that for us! Check out this Facebook photo that someone took after cutting open the side with the mud.
Lokai returns 10% of the proceeds from the sale of every bracelet purchased to the community to support a variety of charitable alliances, so that’s cool too! You can choose to customize the color of the clear beads, but I kinda like what they represent. Also, since the colors are all neutral, I can wear my lokai with anything casual and carry my message to stay balanced with me when I need it most. These would be a great gift for someone who really needs to know that you are thinking about them and that life is about balance.
The silicon lokai bracelet feels rubbery – like the old style jelly bracelets, except it’s thicker. It comes in three sizes. Small (7 inches), Medium (7 3/8 inches) and Large (8 inches). They sent me a small. I am a very small person. My wrist measures 5 and 3/4 of an inch. It slid well over my hand and seemed to loosen a bit after a couple of days of wear.
It feels comfortable on my wrist and is lightweight. I love the message and that Lokai supports the community. I will likely be wearing this for a while to come yet. My daughter liked it, too. However, the small did not fit her. I will have to get her one to remind her to enjoy harmony in life.
